A mosquito does not need much water to breed. A bottle cap's worth is enough to raise a brood, and the low spot in your backyard that stays soggy for a week after a storm holds far more than that. In the Southeast — where the warm, wet season stretches from roughly March into October — that standing water is not a nuisance that dries up before it matters. It is a nursery.
Most homeowners reach for a fogger, a yard spray, or a monthly mosquito service. Those treat the adults you can see. They do nothing about the water producing the next generation a few feet away. If you want fewer mosquitoes for longer than a weekend, you have to look at where water sits and why it will not leave.
Why standing water breeds mosquitoes so fast
Mosquitoes lay their eggs on or right beside still water. In the summer heat of Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas, the full cycle from egg to biting adult runs about 7 to 10 days — and faster when temperatures climb. That timing is the whole story. A yard that drains within a day or two never gives larvae the chance to mature. A yard that holds water for a week completes an entire generation, then starts another, all season long.
This is why mosquitoes are a drainage problem, not only a landscaping one. The issue is not that it rained. The issue is that the water had nowhere to go and stayed long enough to matter. Over a season that long, one recurring wet spot can turn over a dozen generations, and each one starts within arm's reach of your patio.
Why the water lingers
Standing water is a symptom. Across this region, the causes behind it are consistent:
Clay soil that barely absorbs
Much of the Southeast sits on dense red clay with very low percolation rates. Rain arrives faster than the soil can take it in, so it pools on the surface and drains off slowly — a matter of days, not hours.
Flat lots with nowhere to run
Gravity drainage needs slope. On a flat lot, or in the lowest corner of any yard, there is no downhill for water to follow. It simply sits until it soaks in or evaporates, and in clay that takes far too long.
Drainage that has already failed
Many of the homeowners we meet already paid for a fix. A French drain or gravel trench depends on slope and open pore space, and in clay both work against it — fine sediment packs the gravel and silts the pipe closed. Once it clogs, the yard holds water again, and the mosquitoes come back with it.
Where the water hides
Some breeding sites are obvious; others are easy to walk right past. During a rain, or a day after it stops, look for:
- Low spots and tire ruts in the lawn that stay wet or muddy
- The base of downspouts, where roof runoff concentrates
- Old French-drain outlets and catch basins that no longer drain
- Ditch and swale bottoms that hold water instead of moving it
- Compacted areas along fences, sheds, and play sets
If any of these are still wet two or three days after the rain ends, that is where next week's mosquitoes are coming from. Walk the yard on that second day, not the first — anything holding water once the surface has had time to drain is the spot that keeps producing.
Temporary control versus a lasting fix
Sprays and foggers have a place — before an event, or to knock down a bad night. But they are symptom treatment. The adults die, the water stays, and the larvae keep hatching.
