Retaining Wall Drainage: Preventing Failure Before It Starts

A retaining wall looks like a structural problem, but it is almost always a water problem in disguise. When a wall leans, bulges, cracks, or shifts off its footing, the homeowner’s first instinct is to blame the blocks, the rebar, or the contractor who built it. In the vast majority of cases, though, the real culprit is the water trapped behind the wall and the pressure it exerts. Once the drainage layer clogs, the wall is back to bearing full hydrostatic load — often without anyone noticing until it starts to lean.
